The best tip I can give a beginner leader is? Watch your puppy. Say what? Yes, I have a story to tell you about how watching a puppy can help you to become one of the best leaders at most Ballroom Dancing events.
Ballroom dancing for beginners Orlando is all about a time when I was a child and I received my first little puppy. So cute. So tiny - a small Bichon Frise puppy. She was six weeks old and I loved her. I put her new pink collar on her neck - yes - she was a girl. Then I attached her beaded leash. I was so happy to take her on her first walk. Yes, her pink collar and pink, beaded leash was a little over the top, but Daddy spoiled his little girl. That would be me - and I’m thankful..
I said to my new puppy, “Let’s go for a walk.” I turned and started to walk. Something felt wrong while we were walking. I turned my head back to take a peak and see how my little puppy was doing. What did my bulging eyes see? I was dragging that poor little puppy in the grass. She didn’t have one paw on the ground! Gee, I felt horrible.
I quickly scooped her up and gave her a big hug, and apologized profusely. After a few minutes, I regained my composure and put her back on the grass and announced again, “Let’s go for a walk.” I took the tiniest steps I could and her little legs were a blur as she ran to keep up with me. I know why people carry their puppies - this was TOO slow.
So, why do I tell you this story? Because leaders MUST watch their puppies to keep them safe from other couples plowing into them. Leaders MUST watch their puppies to make sure you don’t push her when she is on the wrong foot. Leaders must push their followers, make them do all the work, and when the dance music is over the follower will say, “Thank you so much!” No place on earth does this phenomena happen but on the dance floor. If you try pushing a woman around in the kitchen and make them do all the work - you may not leave the kitchen - alive!
Take your “Puppy Attitude” to a Ballroom Dancing event and your followers will love you and ask you to dance. Yes, this is another phenomena that my beginning leaders doubt when I tell them about it. Watch the video below for more information.
